Schoten: horizontal directional drilling

Pioneer in horizontal directional drilling

Public agency ‘de Scheepvaart NV’ is modernising the quay walls along the Albert Canal at Schoten. An existing drinking water pipe belonging to Water-Link, which crosses the bottom of the Albert Canal, was in the way as a result. Using horizontal directional drilling over a length of 600 metres and 30 metres deep, Van den Berg is constructing a new crossing.

Innovative

Van den Berg is creating the underground crossing in an innovative manner. By interconnecting two points underground, the crossing can be established faster and more efficiently. The result? No repairs or subsidence, less disruption within the industrial areas and continuity in the waterways.

Pioneer status

Van den Berg has its own specialist department exclusively devoted to horizontal directional drilling. With four drilling rigs at its disposal, it can handle this entire market segment. Van den Berg has been a pioneer in this procedure since its launch on the European market in the 1990s.

Only positives

The inconspicuous underground installation of pipelines is a technique that is being used more and more, and above water as well for crossing canals, motorways and railways. This technique takes less time, causes less inconvenience and requires a smaller budget in the laying of utility pipes and cables beneath waterworks, roads, car parks, homes and factories.

Flawless technique

In contrast to the majority of our product pipes, the water pipe in this project had to be coupled ‘during’ the pulling operation. These couplings need to be 100% watertight. A perfect job for Van den Berg, which has achieved yet another successful installation and passed the watertightness test thanks to its expertise and craftsmanship.

Ingenious measuring system

For certain road, rail and water crossings it is impossible to drill above ground. Using an optical gyroscope, Van den Berg compares the theoretical drill path with the actual drill path. Adjustments are made on the basis of the difference.
